Spillsorb

The Natural Peat Absorbent and remediation product Sphagnum peat moss is found growing naturally in the Northern regions of Canada and has been found to have the highest moisture absorbency characteristics of all known peat mosses. Sphagnum differs from other mosses as the root structure known as rhizoids contain micro cells, similar to a sponge which has the natural capability to hold and retain moisture. Growing in its natural state in Quebec we have tested the water retention capacity measuring a given weight of sphagnum to retained water volume,1 lb of sphagnum will retain 9 -14lbs of water.

Once a high quality sphagnum bog is located, the area is trenched and drained to lower the water table, allowing the environmentally friendly harvesting method to proceed. The harvesting process entails ploughing, aeration and sunshine, to bring down the moisture content from 90% to around 40%. Now the sphagnum is ready for vacuum collection. Our harvesters vacuum a 1/4” layer of partially dried sphagnum in a single pass and run continuously during the summer months. The raw sphagnum is then screened to remove unwanted material and taken to our plant in Quebec where it goes through our proprietary heat activation process, slowly reducing the moisture content down to around 10-11%. At this level of moisture content the natural cell structure changes from hydrophilic (holding water) to hydrophobic (repelling water) and encapsulating hydrocarbons. In its natural state sphagnum has a pH of around 4.5 this acidity is derived from the environment in which it grows and the humic acid residue within the cells which is created as a natural by-product of the degradation of the plant life. It is the humic acid that acts as a natural catalyst to help break down the encapsulated hydrocarbons; assisted by bacteria, this process is known as bioremediation.

Once the sphagnum has been heat activated it is double compressed into 3.8 and 1 cubic ft bags and shipped out to our network of Master Distributors around the world.

100 % Natural absorption, we call it “Environmental Intelligence”

SPILLSORB is a natural 100% organic, non-toxic, lab tested, field proven Industrial remediation and absorbent that is very economical, efficient, non-abrasive, and non-leaching and in its natural state is already partially degraded.

The inherent capillary action of the activated peat provides a very powerful wicking action that encapsulates oils, solvents, pesticides, herbicides and all other organic chemicals on contact. The wicking action is capable of pulling oil 12” up a 3”columm making it an ideal solution for wicking and encapsulating spilt oil from soil, preventing migration of the oil or chemicals to ground water.

SPILLSORB suppresses vapors and absorbs hydrocarbons on land and water, in wet and dry conditions making it ideal to treat free hydrocarbons in a run-off situation during heavy rains or flood conditions and requires very little training for your operatives and basic equipment requirements for recovery and disposal.

SPILLSORB is very light in weight which enables operators to carry higher

absorbing quantities without personnel health risks. It also safely cleans up 20 times more than the same volume of clay, thereby reducing transportation and disposal costs.

SPILLSORB in a hydrocarbon loaded state will not leech, making it safe and clean to handle. Used or spent material can be land farmed or incinerated as a BTU enhancer saving valuable landfill space.

SPILLSORB as an energy source contributes 9500 BTU’s per lb, excluding the hydrocarbon content and will leave an inert ash residue of only 2%.

SPILLSORB can be purchased in 3.8 cubic ft double compressed bags alternatively in boom, socks, pads and spill response kits from your local Master Distributor.
